Yeondeunghoe, a lantern lighting festival, takes place throughout the Republic of Korea. As the eighth day of the fourth lunar month (Buddha’s birthday) approaches, the entire country lights up with colorful lanterns. Originally a religious ritual to celebrate Shakyamuni’s birth, Yeondeunghoe has now become a national spring festival open to all. Streets are hung with colorful lotus lanterns and crowds holding handmade lanterns gather for a celebratory parade. The annual festival starts with bathing an image of the baby Buddha as a ritual celebrating Shakyamuni’s birth. This is followed by a public procession of lantern-bearing participants, after which participants gather for recreational events culminating in collective games. Members of the public can participate by carrying lanterns they have made to express good wishes for themselves, their families and neighborhoods, and the entire country. Lighting the lanterns also symbolizes enlightening the minds of individuals, communities and all of society through Buddha’s wisdom. The related knowledge and skills are mainly transmitted through Buddhist temples and communities, and the Yeondeunghoe Safeguarding Association plays a notable role in the organization of educational programs. The festival is a time of joy during which social boundaries are temporarily erased. In times of social difficulties, it plays a particularly important role in integrating social and helping people overcome the troubles of the day.
연등회는 대한민국 전역에서 열리는 연등 축제입니다. 음력 4월 8일이 다가오면 온 나라가 형형색색의 연등으로 물듭니다. 원래 석가모니의 탄생을 축하하는 종교 의식이었던 연등회는 이제 모두에게 열려 있는 전국적인 봄 축제가 되었습니다. 거리는 형형색색의 연등으로 장식되어 있고 수제 연등을 들고 인파가 모여 축하 퍼레이드를 합니다. 연례 축제는 석가모니의 탄생을 축하하는 의식으로 아기 부처의 이미지를 목욕시키는 것으로 시작됩니다. 그 다음에는 등불을 든 참가자들의 공개 행렬이 이어지며, 그 후 참가자들은 레크리에이션 행사를 위해 모여서 집단 게임으로 마무리됩니다. 시민들은 자신과 가족, 이웃, 그리고 국가 전체에 대한 염원을 담아 제작한 연등을 들고 참여할 수 있습니다. 연등을 밝히는 것은 또한 부처님의 지혜를 통해 개인과 공동체, 사회 전체의 마음을 밝히는 것을 상징합니다. 이와 관련된 지식과 기술은 주로 사찰과 공동체를 통해 전승되고 있으며, 교육 프로그램을 조직하는 데에는 연등회 수호회가 주목할만한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 축제는 사회적 경계가 일시적으로 지워지는 기쁨의 시간으로 사회적으로 어려운 시기에 사회를 통합하고 사람들이 그 시대의 어려움을 극복하도록 돕는 데 특히 중요한 역할을 합니다.
