Before I go to this Dol-hareubang park, knowledge about Dol-hareubang and Jeju-do that I know had been very lacking. So, I did not explain them exactly. So, I add and writing out explanation that I made out before here.

Dol-harbangs from Jeju-seong
Dol-harbangs from Jeju-seong were made of basalt containing the wide area of granulite and jadeite, which is quite impermeable, solid, and thus better to express the detail of a face and fingers. their figures are almost three-proportioned. they were a headgear with round brims, have a vulvous nose, and compressed lips. they look sturdy and robust, with lopsided shoulders, like Lokapola, (the four deities who guard the four cardinal directions.) This type of dol-harbang is about 157-238 centimeters tall, and apperarsextremely secure and reliable.

Jeongju-seok and Jeongnang
Jeongju-seok is usually made of porous basalt, or wood, called Jeongju-mok. Jeongnang refers to three or four branches laid on a gate to prevent horses and cattle from entering a house.It was also used to indicate the presence or absence of the owner of the house, while three means the house is empty.
The Function of a Podium
Podiums firmly supporting the heavy Jeju-mok dol-harbangs have another function, we assume after looking at the groove engraved in them. Alos, it seems Jeongnang was laid between an 'O'-shaped hole in one side, and an 90digree turned right 'L'-shaped hole in the other side, Dol-harbangs were not initially expected to do this function. As the castle gate was replaced, Jeongnang and dol-harbangs were positioned, and the podiums took on this function.
정주석과 정낭
'정주석'은 주로 다공질 현무암으로 만들어졌으나 지역에 따라 나무를 사용하기도 했는데, 돌로 된 것을 '정주석', 나무로 된 것을 '정주목'이라 불렀습니다. 정낭은 야외에서 방목 중인 말과 소가 집 안으로 침입하는 것을 막는 목적으로 대문에 나뭇가지 서너 개를 걸쳐두었던 데서 유래한 풍속으로 점차 주인의 출입을 알려주는 역할을 했습니다. 하나만 걸쳐 있을 때는 사람이 근처에 있다는 것이고, 둘은 아이들이 근처에서 놀고 있다는 것이고, 셋은 집이 비어있다는 표시입니다.
기단석의 기능
묵직한 돌하르방을 꼿꼿이 세워주었던 기단석에는 또 다른 기능이 있었습니다. 이것은 제주목 돌하르방의 기단석 중 일부에 뚜렷이 패인 홈으로 알 수 있습니다. 한쪽은 ㅇ자로 다른 쪽은 L을 시계방향으로 90도 회전한 모양(주-특수문자를 사용해야하는 불편함 때문에 이렇게 표현했습니다.)자로 새겨진 이 구멍에 사람들은 정낭을 걸쳤습니다. 사실 이러한 기능은 원래 돌하르방에게 부여된 것은 아니었고, 제주읍성과 대정성 그리고 정의현성의 성문 대신 정낭을 걸쳐두었던 자리에 돌하르방이 들어서면서 그 기단석이 이 역할을 물려받게 되었던 것 같습니다.

Jeju's administrative districts, maintained for more than 500 years, are divided into three are as: Jeju-seong, Daejeong-seong, and Jeongeui-seong. If one enters a castle, they will meet a pair of dol-harbangs, standing beside a curved wall. these stone statues greet those entering the castle, or guard it, with a dignified, imposing presence, so it cannot be overcome even by daring soldiers.

Jeju Island and Dol-harbang
Jeju is an island of rough rocks and wild winds. A warm heart and affection are required of the Jeju people, who have live day by day, enduring the harsh, extreme environment. To overcome this they pray to dol-harbangs, mystic stone sculptures of hope and happiness. In 1971, when they were placed at the east, west, and southern gates of the three provincial castles, Jeju-seong, Jeongeui-seong, and daejeong-seong, designated as the folk material No.2, and called dol-harbang. Civilians originally called them Beoksu-meori, Wooseong-mok, or Musoeng-mok, while in a d0cumentary records, they are referred to as Ongjung-seok.
A dol-harbang is determined by its saucer-like eyes, bulbous nose, huge ears, and compressed lips. With two hands modestly placed on its belly, its facial expression contains a smile or frown. Their appearance depends on the time of day : they appear different in the dawn, the evening, on a bright spring day, or during a gloomy, rainy season. And if you feel good, a dol-harbang seems to laugh, and if you feel gloomy, it seems to shed tears. The dol-harbang is our friend with a range of different appearances.

부리부리한 왕방울 눈, 뭉툭한 주먹코, 커다란 귀, 굳게 다문 입술. 이것이 바로 돌하르방의 모습입니다. 배위에 두 손을 얌전하게 올려놓은 그의 표정은 어떻게 보면 웃는 것 같고, 어떻게 보면 찡그리는 것 같습니다. 이처럼 돌하르방의 표정에는 바람이 있고, 하늘이 있습니다. 그래서 이른 새벽과 고즈넉한 저녁, 화사한 봄날과 흐릿한 장마철마다 표정이 다릅니다. 아마 여러분의 기분이 좋으면 돌하르방도 따라 웃고, 우울하면 그도 따라 눈물을 흘릴 지도 모릅니다. 돌하르방은 때마다 표정을 바꾸는 살아있는 우리의 친구이기 때문입니다.
Dol-harbang and Gija Belief
Gija Belief is a form of shamanism associated with the notion of preferring a son to a daughter. In ancient Jeju, women unable to give birth to a son prayed each night in front of a Dol-harbang. These women also drink water, blended with pulverized stone power, from the broken nose of the Dol-harbang. But at the same time, those who drank the water also miscarried. Today, Dol-harbangs with a broken nose are found in every nook of Jeju.
돌하르방과 기자신앙 (남근석)
기자신앙이란 남아선호 사상이 무속과 연결된 것을 일컫는 말입니다. 옛 제주에서는 아이를 갖지 못했던 많은 여인네들이 밤마다 돌하르방 앞으로 와 기도를 했습니다. 자녀가 없는 여인이 한밤에 돌하르방의 코를 쪼아서 물에 타 마시면 임신을 할 수 있다는 말이 전해지기도 했으며, 또 반대로 유산을 원하는 여인이 돌하르방의 코를 쪼아 가루를 먹으면 아이를 지울 수 있다는 속설도 있었습니다. 이러한 믿음으로 곳곳에서는 코가 망가진 돌하르방들이 보이기도 합니다.
Dol-harbang and Milestone
A milestone, useally made of stone, indicates a location, with natural of artificial structure. Dol-harbangs, constructed in each province, play the part of a miestone, informing people where they are in a province. Its function was to reassure travelers the proper path was being followed, and so dol-harbangs have long played the role of a boundary-mark distinguishing the inside and outside of an area; a mark indicating boundaries and directions.

표지석의 일반적인 의미는 땅 위에 자연적이거나 인위적인 구조물을 세워 사람들에게 알려주던 석물이랍니다. 각 성에 세워진 돌하르방 또한 성에 들어었음을 알리는 표지석 역할을 하고 있었습니다. 돌하르방의 표지적 기능은 성의 안과 밖을 구분하는 경계표, 출입금지를 알리는 금표, 길을 알려주는 노표의 기능 등이 있었습니다.

Sice ancient times, there have been many Bangsatap, or tower to ward off evil spirits in Jeju. Bangsatap, a stack of small stones, differs from dol-harbang, but has the same meaning. As with the Bangsatap, they protect a village from infection and disaster.

Since ancient times, Jeju has been an ideal village, without thieves, gates, and beggars. This ha resulted from the people from Jeju, who deeply believe in peace. In the center of this peace is a dol-harbang.
