Dol-harbang and Milestone

A milestone, useally made of stone, indicates a location, with natural of artificial structure. Dol-harbangs, constructed n each province, play the part of a miestone, informing people where they are in a province. Its function was to eassure travelers the proper path was being followed, and so dol-harbangs have long played the role of a boundary-mark distinguishing the inside and outside of an area; a mark indicating boundaries and directions.

돌하르방과 표지석

표지석의 일반적인 의미는 땅 위에 자연적이거나 인위적인 구조물을 세워 사람들에게 알려주던 석물이랍니다. 각 성에 세워진 돌하르방 또한 성에 들어었음을 알리는 표지석 역할을 하고 있었습니다. 돌하르방의 표지적 기능은 성의 안과 밖을 구분하는 경계표, 출입금지를 알리는 금표, 길을 알려주는 노표의 기능 등이 있었습니다.

Dol-harbang and Gatekeeper

Jeju's administrative districts, maintained for more than 500 years, are divided into three are as: Jeju-seong, Daejeong- eong, and Jeongeui-seong. If one enters a castle, they will meet a pair of dol-harbangs, standing beside a curved all. these stone statues greet those entering the castle, or guard it, with a dignified, imposing presence, so it cannot be overcome even by daring soldiers.

돌하르방과 수문장

제주성, 대정성, 정의성 셋으로 나누어진 제주의 행정구역은 5백여 년간 유지되었습니다. 외지인이 성 안에 들어서면, 처음으 S자 모양의 옹성 곱이와 그 양 옆에 세워진 돌하르방을 한 쌍씩 만나게 되었지요. 이 의젓한 석상은 들어오는 이들을 반기기도 했지만, 위엄과 기품을 풍기며 성을 지키는 역할을 했었습니다. 아무리 굳 센 병사 여럿이 있다해도 돌하르방의 위풍당당함을 이길 수는 없었습니다.

The Function of a Podium

Podiums firmly supporting the heavy Jeju-mok dol-harbangs have another function, we assume after looking at the groove engraved in them. Alos, it seems Jeongnang was laid between an 'O'-shaped hole in one side, and an 90digree turned right 'L'-shaped hole in the other side, Dol-harbangs were not initially expected to do this function. As the castle gate was replaced, Jeongnang and dol-harbangs were positioned, and the podiums took on this function.

기단석의 기능

묵직한 돌하르방을 꼿꼿이 세워주었던 기단석에는 또 다른 기능이 있었습니다. 이것은 제주목 돌하르방의 기단석 중 일부에 뚜렷이 패인 홈으로 알 수 있습니다. 한쪽은 ㅇ자로 다른 쪽은 L을 시계방향으로 90도 회전한 모양(주-특수문자를 사용해야하는 불편함 때문에 이렇게 표현했습니다.)자로 새겨진 이 구멍에 사람들은 정낭을 걸쳤습니다. 사실 이러한 기능은 원래 돌하르방에게 부여된 것은 아니었고, 제주읍성과 대정성 그리고 정의현성의 성문 대신 정낭을 걸쳐두었던 자리에 돌하르방이 들어서면서 그 기단석이 이 역할을 물려받게 되었던 것 같습니다.
