Jeongju-seok and Jeongnang

Jeongju-seok is usually made of porous basalt, or wood, called Jeongju-mok.
Jeongnang refers to three or four branches laid on a gate to prevent horses and cattle from entering a house. Ti was also used to indicate the presence or absence of the owner of the house. While three means the house is empty.

정주석과 정낭

'정주석'은 주로 다공질 현무암으로 만들어졌으나 지역에 따라 나무를 사용하기도 했는데, 돌로 된 것을 '정주석', 나무로 된 것을 '정주목'이라 불렀습니다. 정낭은 야외에서 방목 중인 말과 소가 집 안으로 침입하는 것을 막는 목적으로 대문에 나뭇가지 서너 개를 걸쳐두었던 데서 유래한 풍속으로 점차 주인의 출입을 알려주는 역할을 했습니다. 하나만 걸쳐 있을 때는 사람이 근처에 있다는 것이고, 둘은 아이들이 근처에서 놀고 있다는 것이고, 셋은 집이 비어있다는 표시입니다.

Dol-harbang and Gija Belief

Gija Belief is a form of shamanism associated with the notion of preferring a son to a daughter. In ancient Jeju, women unable to give birth to a son prayed each night in front of a Dol-harbang. These women also drink water, blended with pulverized stone power, from the broken nose of the Dol-harbang. But at the same time, those who drank the water also miscarried. Today, Dol-harbangs with a broken nose are found in every nook of Jeju.

돌하르방과 기자신앙 (남근석)

기자신앙이란 남아선호 사상이 무속과 연결된 것을 일컫는 말입니다. 옛 제주에서는 아이를 갖지 못했던 많은 여인네들이 밤마다 돌하르방 앞으로 와 기도를 했습니다. 자녀가 없는 여인이 한밤에 돌하르방의 코를 쪼아서 물에 타 마시면 임신을 할 수 있다는 말이 전해지기도 했으며, 또 반대로 유산을 원하는 여인이 돌하르방의 코를 쪼아 가루를 먹으면 아이를 지울 수 있다는 속설도 있었습니다. 이러한 믿음으로 곳곳에서는 코가 망가진 돌하르방들이 보이기도 합니다.

Dol-harbang and Bangsatap

Sice ancient times, there have been many Bangsatap, or tower to ward off evil spirits in Jeju. Bangsatap, a stack of small stones, differs from dol-harbang, but has the same meaning. As with the Bangsatap, they protect a village from infection and disaster.

돌하르방과 액막이

예로부터 제주도 곳곳에는 많은 방사탑이 있었습니다. 방사탑은 마음의 재난을 막기 위해 조그만 돌을 쌓아 올린 것이랍니다. 이러한 방사탑과 돌하르방은 형태에서만 다를 뿐 같은 의미를 내포하고 있었습니다. 즉 사람들은 방사탑처럼 돌하르방을 통해 고을에 몹쓸 병이 돌거나 재난이 생기는 것을 막고자 했던 것입니다.
