Jeju Island and Dol-harbang

Jeju is an island of rough rocks and wild winds. A warm heart and affection are required of the Jeju people, who have live day by day, enduring the harsh, extreme environment. To overcome this they pray to dol-harbangs, mystic stone sculptures of hope and happiness. In 1971, when they were placed at the east, west, and southern gates of the three provincial castles, Jeju-seong, Jeongeui-seong, and daejeong-seong, designated as the folk material No.2, and called dol-harbang. Civilians originally called them Beoksu-meori, Wooseong-mok, or Musoeng-mok, while in a d0cumentary records, they are referred to as Ongjung-seok.

A dol-harbang is determined by its saucer-like eyes, bulbous nose, huge ears, and compressed lips. With two hands modestly placed on its belly, its facial expression contains a smile or frown. Their appearance depends on the time of day : they appear different in the dawn, the evening, on a bright spring day, or during a gloomy, rainy season. And if you feel good, a dol-harbang seems to laugh, and if you feel gloomy, it seems to shed tears. The dol-harbang is our friend with a range of different appearances.

제주도와 돌하르방

부리부리한 왕방울 눈, 뭉툭한 주먹코, 커다란 귀, 굳게 다문 입술. 이것이 바로 돌하르방의 모습입니다. 배위에 두 손을 얌전하게 올려놓은 그의 표정은 어떻게 보면 웃는 것 같고, 어떻게 보면 찡그리는 것 같습니다. 이처럼 돌하르방의 표정에는 바람이 있고, 하늘이 있습니다. 그래서 이른 새벽과 고즈넉한 저녁, 화사한 봄날과 흐릿한 장마철마다 표정이 다릅니다. 아마 여러분의 기분이 좋으면 돌하르방도 따라 웃고, 우울하면 그도 따라 눈물을 흘릴 지도 모릅니다. 돌하르방은 때마다 표정을 바꾸는 살아있는 우리의 친구이기 때문입니다.

Dol-harbangs from Jeju-seong

Dol-harbangs from Jeju-seong were made of basalt containing the wide area of granulite and jadeite, which is quite impermeable, solid, and thus better to express the detail of a face and fingers. their figures are almost three-proportioned. they were a headgear with round brims, have a vulvous nose, and compressed lips. they look sturdy and robust, with lopsided shoulders, like Lokapola, (the four deities who guard the four cardinal directions.) This type of dol-harbang is about 157-238 centimeters tall, and apperarsextremely secure and reliable.

제주목 돌하르방

제주성의 돌하르방은 동쪽에 넓게 분포된 장석과 휘석 결정이 들어있는 현무암으로 제작되었는데, 이 돌은 공기 구멍이 적은데다 단단하여 얼굴이나 손가락 등 세부표현을 하기에 적합했습니다. 제주성의 돌하르방은 상반신만 표현되었고, 전체 비율은 3등신에 가깝습니다. 모자는 둥근 테가 달린 벙거지이며, 큰 눈에 주먹코 그리고 앙 다문 입술을 지녔고, 한쪽 어깨가 치켜 오라가 사찰의 사천왕상처럼 건장합니다. 그 크기도 157~238Cm 정도로 다른 읍성에 비해 컸습니다. 무척 든든하고 믿음직스러운 모습이지요.

Dol-harbangs from Jeoneui-seong

Dol-harbangs from Jeoneui-seong are also made of basalt with olivine. Likewise, as its head is huge, it appears to be composed of two proportional figures. Unlike dol-harbangs of Jeju-seong and Daejeong-seon, it appears slender and flat. Its headgear is smaller than its face, its eyes are slanted, and its lips are dimly carved in a small scale. This dol-harbang exudes mystic, ethereal, and magnificent mood as a Jangseung, or tutelary posts, does.

정의현 돌하르방

정의성 돌하르방도 대정성처럼 작은 감람석이 들어있는 현무암으로 만들었습니다. 마찬가지로 얼굴이 커서 이등신에 가까웠고요. 두 읍성과 달리 이 돌하르방은 날씬하고 평편했습니다. 모자도 얼굴보다 작았고, 눈 꼬리는 올라갔으며, 입술은 보이듯말듯 작고 흐릿하게 조각되었습니다. 이 돌하르방은 육지의 장승처럼 위엄 있고 영험한 기운을 풍겼습니다.
